There are a number of strategies that have been identified that address prevention of workplace violence toward nurses. This presentation will focus on de-escalation as one specific strategy which includes:

  1. Defining and describing the prevalence of type 2 workplace violence in healthcare.
  2. Identifying the signs of escalation including triggers that may be displayed by health care workers.
  3. Describing strategies for establishing clear professional boundaries and application of evidence-based de-escalation techniques.
  4. Reviewing the common pitfalls that undermine de-escalation efforts and what to avoid.
