Mentorship Is Already Happening. Let’s Be Intentional About It.

Mentorship in nursing does not always begin with a formal program, scheduled meeting, or designated title. It happens in everyday moments: answering a question, sharing what you have learned, offering encouragement after a difficult shift, inviting another perspective, or demonstrating how you approach a challenge.

Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation® recently encouraged nurses to consider these small but meaningful acts through its Mentor in Motion: Leading by Example Every Day challenge. The challenge may be wrapping up today, but its message is one worth carrying forward.

Nurses learn from one another at every career stage. A new nurse may benefit from a colleague’s clinical insight or reassurance, while an experienced nurse can gain fresh perspective from someone entering the profession. Mentorship is reciprocal, and none of us needs to have every answer to make a positive impact.

This week, consider one intentional way you can support a colleague:

  • Share a helpful resource or piece of hard-earned wisdom.
  • Take a moment to recognize someone’s growth or contribution.
  • Ask a colleague what support would be useful.
  • Stay open to learning from someone else’s experience.

Leadership can begin with what we model, what we share, and how we show up for one another. Together, those everyday actions help create nursing workplaces where people feel supported, respected, and encouraged to grow.
