What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?
I’ve always been drawn to professions centered on compassion and service, and nursing felt like a natural fit. It aligned with my personality, my strengths, and my values, and offered a meaningful way to make a positive impact in people’s lives.
What do you enjoy most about being a nurse?
Nursing has allowed me to pursue a variety of career paths and experience many different roles and practice settings. Even after more than 25 years, the profession continues to provide endless opportunities for learning and growth.
Can you share a memorable experience from your nursing career?
Working through the COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most memorable times in my nursing career. It tested me in unexpected ways but also highlighted the resilience, adaptability, and compassion that define our profession.
How has being a member of WNA benefited your professional development?
Through my WNA membership, I became involved with the Nurses Caring for Nurses Taskforce and the Nurses Foundation of Wisconsin. These experiences have expanded my professional network and given me valuable opportunities to strengthen my leadership and communication skills.
What advice would you give to new nurses entering the field?
Embrace lifelong learning and stay open to opportunities that push you outside your comfort zone.
What are your favorite ways to unwind and practice self-care?
I recharge by spending time in my garden—it’s relaxing and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I also love unwinding with true crime shows and podcasts, and I make it a priority to spend quality time with family and friends.
How do you stay current with the latest developments and best practices in nursing?
I stay current in the profession by remaining actively involved in several nursing organizations and regularly participating in ANA and WNA webinars and events. These opportunities help me stay informed about emerging trends, best practices, and policy updates.
What impact do you hope to make in your community through your work as a nurse?
I am passionate about advancing nursing practice beyond traditional healthcare settings, and I’m a strong advocate for applying nursing competencies to address the economic and social conditions that negatively influence individuals’ mental and physical well-being.
What does being part of the WNA community mean to you?
To me, being part of the WNA community means connection, advocacy, and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change in our profession.
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
I love traveling, so taking a spontaneous day trip is always a fun adventure!
What’s your go-to comfort food?
My favorite comfort foods are family recipes that bring back memories of time spent with loved ones.
Do you have any pets? If so, tell us about them!
We have a Silver Lab named Greta – she is the best! She loves everyone and is super sweet.
What’s your favorite type of music or favorite band?
I am a huge fan of the Dave Matthews Band. I have seen them in concert more than 40 times!
What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
My husband, our two teenage kids, and I were incredibly fortunate to spend three weeks traveling around Central Europe in the summer of 2024. It was such a special experience that I’m not sure any vacation will ever top it!
What’s something on your bucket list that you hope to accomplish?
My husband and I are planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand when I retire. I’ve dreamed of visiting that part of the world since elementary school, so it would be incredible to finally experience it.
