What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing?
I wanted to be a nurse to be involved in my community. I always wanted to help people, and nursing was the best career to do that.
How long have you been a member of the Wisconsin Nurses Association?
Since I was in undergraduate in nursing school over 12 years ago.
What do you enjoy most about being a nurse?
I love the diversity of experiences and versatility of being a nurse. On any given day, a nurse fulfills so many different roles and can affect patient outcomes in a variety of ways.
Can you share a memorable experience from your nursing career?
I remember one day I was caring for a patient who spoke English as a second language. When I walked into their room at shift change, I learned that I could speak his primary language. The patient was sooo excited that someone spoke their primary language and was so relieved during the stay.
How has being a member of WNA benefited your professional development?
Being in WNA has afforded me the opportunity to impact the practice of nurses in WI. It has allowed me to advocate for the profession with the rest of the nurses which has been very fulfilling.
What advice would you give to new nurses entering the field?
For all the new nurses entering the field: first, welcome to the best profession. As soon as you can, find yourself a preceptor, a mentor and a coach to help guide you in your career. And don’t forget to cherish those relationships with co-workers. They make days so much better.
What are your favorite ways to unwind and practice self-care?
I love to exercise, spend time with family, and watch football (Go Pack Go).
How do you stay current with the latest developments and best practices in nursing?
I am a member of a couple professional organizations like WNA, MNRS, Sigma Theta Tau and ANPD. I also subscribe to receive the table of content to journals that pertain to my practice and area of expertise.
What impact do you hope to make in your community through your work as a nurse?
My goal in life is to ensure fair health care access.
What does being part of the WNA community mean to you?
It means having a voice .
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
Staying in or spending time with family
What’s your go-to comfort food?
Casseroles or home made soups
What’s your favorite type of music or favorite band?
I love afrobeats
What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
To New Orleans. We enjoyed everything the city had to offer and it was so affordable.
Do you have a favorite place to eat in your hometown?
Castlewood restaurant in Sturtevant. It as the best breakfast.
What’s something on your bucket list that you hope to accomplish?
I would love to visit every country in Africa
