Nurses In the News: ANA President Speaks Out on Student Loan Threat to Nursing

PBS NewsHour recently highlighted a developing national issue that could significantly impact the nursing profession. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, medical students would be capped at borrowing $50,000 per year but the Trump administration is proposing an even stricter borrowing cap for graduate programs in nursing, public health, and social work.

This proposal would effectively declassify nursing as a “professional” field for federal loan purposes, limiting access to the financial aid many nurses rely on to pursue advanced education. Such changes could reshape how the U.S. trains nurses and exacerbate the existing workforce shortage.

In the segment, American Nurses Association President Jennifer Mensik Kennedy discussed the real-world consequences of this proposal and what it would mean for current and future nurses.
