Why a conference focusing on diabetes?
This is WNA's second annual Diabetes Care and Education Conference, designed by an interprofessional planning committee representing diabetes educators, nurses, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, and dietitians. Our focus is on health equity of diabetes management of adults and pediatrics within healthcare systems and communities. Diabetes is a growing chronic condition, and all healthcare professionals can benefit from this educational opportunity.
Who should attend?
The content in this day-and-a-half conference targets the needs of nurses, advanced practice nurses, dietitians, certified diabetes care and education specialists, and all others delivering diabetes care in acute, primary, and community-based care settings around Wisconsin and beyond. There will be an emphasis on the social determinants of health and health equity throughout the conference. Opportunities to build new collegial relationships and referral resources will be built in throughout the event.

Continuing Education Credit: These educational offerings are jointly provided by the Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA) and the Wisconsin Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (WAND). The Conference offers participants up to 10.75 contact hours/CPEUs, and the Preconference offers 5.0 contact hours/CPEUs of:
- nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) through WNA, some of which have been designated as ‘pharmacology’ content. ALL attendees (not just nurses) are eligible to receive these contact hours; it is the responsibility of participants to determine whether the content provided meets the specific requirements of their certifying or licensing body.

Please note that the continuing education credit earned at the Preconference or Conference may be used toward:

*Attention CDCESs: the Conference offers one ADCES-required CE activity 'regarding the annual release of American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Care for Diabetes'. Completion of 2 such CE activities will be required to renew your certification starting in 2025. - certification/renewal of the RD or RDN & DTR or NDTR Credentials and certification through CDR. This workshop will explore this evidence-based approach to supporting people with diabetes in making healthy lifestyle changes. We will learn and apply skills in role play situations and discuss case studies. This session is appropriate for all skill levels. Join us as we learn together how to better connect with our patients and harness their intrinsic motivation for change.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this workshop, participants will be better able to:
- Identify the key domains of the spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
- Utilize the core skill of reflective listening to demonstrate empathy with patients with diabetes
- Employ the strategic objective of evoking change talk when supporting patients with diabetes

Trained as a clinical mental health counselor, Mia has worked in a variety of behavioral health and primary care settings. She has spent over a decade focused on the integration of behavioral health into primary care settings. Mia is a sought-after trainer in Motivational Interviewing and a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

WNA is seeking support for our Diabetes Care & Education conference in the following ways:
1. Be an exhibitor … Reserving your space will give you access to participants from 7:30 AM-1:40 PM on Friday, September 29 with dedicated exhibitor time from 7:30-8:45 AM, 10:00-10:25 AM, and during the participant lunch, from 12:30-1:40 PM. Breakfast, breaks, and lunch will be provided in or near the exhibit area for best visibility. Conference participants will be provided with a ‘passport’ to encourage visits with exhibitors with prizes awarded for the most stamps or stickers. The cost of an exhibit ‘booth’ is $500 and includes a skirted 8-foot table with chairs and internet connection if needed. Disclaimers: a) All displays will be located outside the conference space; b) WNA welcomes all vendors to exhibit at the conference, but we do reserve the right to refuse any exhibitor deemed objectionable to our purpose.

3. Product Theatre ... Choose from one of six 30-minute timeslots during the conference on Friday to present your diabetes-related devices or technology to participants. Exhibit theatre times are 8:00-8:30 AM or 1:00-1:30 PM. A separate room with AV equipment for your presentation will be provided along with signage. Indicate the time you prefer at sign-up, and we will do our best to honor your request. Exhibit theatre sessions are reserved on a first come, first served basis, however, preference will be given to those that can offer hands-on experience with medical devices used for diabetes management. The cost to present in our exhibit theatre is $900 (includes an exhibit table on Friday). Disclaimer: Exhibit theatre sessions will be included in the conference schedule/agenda and publicized on the conference web page as an option for participants during specific break times; participants are not required to attend or register separately.
